GW/MW-016 – Moelwyn Mawr

Yet another unique
I
think I mentioned before that I had let some of these summits slip under the
radar as I concentrated on summits in other parts of the UK. Well the focus now
was to really make a concerted effort to tick the boxes...this was to be another one of them.
I
parked at SH 634440 and started the 1.8 miles walk in bright sunshine. After
about half way it gets progressively steeper…there is a faint path with footholds
as you leave the old mine workings…tricky in the mist or icy conditions. Room
for HF on top and whilst I was there the summit was busy but everybody was very
aware of the need for social distancing.
Great
time on the radio with Karen and Neil already on summit and waiting for an s2s
with me. Ian and Esther also called in with a surprise s2s at the end…thanks
everyone.

On returning to the car I had my usual coffee and a socially distanced chat to the wife of the farmer on who’s land I had walked up to the summit. She told me that her route is usually from SH 635435 up to the bwlch at SH 660440 then North up to the summit. I enjoyed this summit….there are some you don’t want to go back to again but I think I’ll be back for this one.
My activation set-up
HF:- Elecraft KX2 (8 watts) and 4Ah LiPo
Antenna - 3 band link dipole (60/40/20
(+15m extensions +80m loading coils)
(VHF) Yaesu FT270 & Yaesu FT2
(5watts) into a ‘Slim G’.
Antenna support – 5m Fishing pole
Thanks everyone for the contacts
