G/DC-008 - Hensbarrow Downs

There was another storm brewing in the Atlantic and it looked like today would be our last chance to finish off all the summits in G/DC. As it was going to be a really nice day I decided to hit the last three during the day probably ending the last summit in the dark.

Due to mining activities the summit of Hensbarrow Downs has moved and is quite a bit higher than the old summit which was situated at the Trig.  Park at SW 992575 then head East towards the Trigpoint on a narrow overgrown track from within the car park and keeping the fence on your left.

Head for the Trigpoint...white dot in the distance

Work your way around the little hump with the trigpoint and head for the mining road above which is accessed via a drainage culvert. 

Head for the bushes and the culvert which leads up onto the road

Go around the hairpin bend and head up onto high ground as soon as possible..still within Open Access ground. The summit can be activated from within the Open Access area as shown on my map.

I had spotted saying that I would be on a nominated frequency on 60m in 30 minutes…this brought a mini-pileup which was orderly and I soon worked my way through all the chasers...thanks everyone.

My view of the mining activities

My visit to 80m was over very quickly which enabled me to pack up and make my way back to the car…we had a long journey to the next summit.

My activation set-up

HF:- Elecraft KX2 (10 watts) and 4Ah LiPo

Antenna - 3 band link dipole (60/40/20 (+15m extensions +80m loading coils)

Antenna support - 7m Fishing pole.
