GW/SW-003 Fan Brycheiniog

Misty for a while

GW/SW-003 Fan Brycheiniog

15/03/2016
My GPS track
Park at SN8559 2232….room for about 5 cars. A reasonably well defined grassy track to begin with but becomes rather indistinct as you hit the boggy bits.
Yes, the summit is over there
You have to aim to hit the SE corner of Llyn y Fan Fawr which then lines you up nicely for the well defined track which takes you diagonally up the side above the lake.
Diagonal track up the side..highlighted by the snow...military right
The military (trainees) were on a mountain skills course  today and also the summit was very busy with numerous hill walkers.
Remnants of snow on the track
Looking down on Llyn y Fan Fawr
Nice cairn on top which gives a welcome shelter. Took us an hour and a half to reach the top … about 2.3miles.
Carin in sight..misty summit
I started on 60m and within minutes had qualified the summit.

Someone from the military joined us in the cairn. He and others were keeping an eye on the young recruits from a distance..we had a brief chat about SOTA then he was on his way. With a spot from G6TUH I was quickly into a large pile-up on 40m with many WAB chasers joining in for the Trig and square. A surprise s2s was the one with Victor GI4ONL/p on GI/AH-002 Knocklayd and once again Juerg HB9BIN/p made the log with an s2s from HB/BE-151 Selibuel..thank you both.

However, it all came to an end and I hope everybody who wanted to make my log did so. Val had heard Adrian calling on 2m from Pen y Fan so he was soon in the log with a 5/9 each way..thanks Adrian.
Any s2s possibilities on RRT..trig in the mist
As I finished with Adrian another couple of local stations made my log. I began to pack the gear away and then Mal called me for the summit bringing in a surprise call from Rob on GW/NW-042 Moel y Gamelin and telling me that Nick was looking for me. I hastily attached the cable tie dipole to the fishing pole  which now has a quick assembly clip on it  and with Val holding the fishing pole Nick was in my log….thank you both.

The mist cleared just as we were leaving

My activation set up today:-  (HF) Yaesu FT817 (5 watts) (4Ah LiPo),  3 band link dipole (60/40/20),  (VHF) Yaesu FT270 (5watts) with ‘cable tie dipole’ - 7m Fishing pole.

Thanks everyone for the contacts and the spots.
