GW/SW-005 Fan Fawr

More winter bonus points

GW/SW-005 Fan Fawr

12/03/2016

This summit usually follows Pen Y Fan GW/SW-001 to form a double activation, however, we had activated PyF a month ago making the decision to visit this one at a later date…today was the day.

Car park for PyF...full!..get there early on a weekend

We arrived at the cairn and set up just below it to be out of the wind. It was slightly misty but we felt sorry for those on Pen y Fan as it was shrouded in thick cloud.

I had a very good run on 60m with most of the regular chasers calling in so thank you one and all as I qualified the summit in 3 minutes.

I didn’t really get going on 40m as it was heavy with QRM from a contest and I soon gave up calling when Rod MW0JLA/p called me for an s2s from Cefn yr Ystrad on 2m. As I completed a contact with Viki on 70cms I heard Mal and Ian calling from  Long Mynd-Pole Bank..in the log..thanks everybody.

I decide to give a call on my original 40m frequency as it seemed quiet once more and believe it or not there were chaser waiting including an s2s with Juerg on DM/BW-850 Hochbuhl…. thanks everybody. Didn’t last long though with no UK chasers heard.

As the sun was now shining we decided to pack up and work our way to the Trig which is a good distance South of the cairn on what is a very large activation zone. Setting a short distance away from a busy trig I tried both 60m and 40m with some success with both regular SOTA chasers and WAB chasers calling in…thanks everybody.

When everything went quiet Val went looking for a Geocache whilst I packed up, It didn’t take her long to find it and we soon made our way back to the cairn where I picked up a further three s2s with Alistair on Cyrniau Nod and Mal and Ian now on Brown Clee Hill on the Welsh Borders. I finished the day with a nice s2s and a chat with Rich on Coity Mountain who was activating only his second summit..,,well done Rich. John MW0XOT called in and we had a nice QSO on the way down.
