Back on the hills

Our youngest son and fiancée had bought me a special gift for my birthday.  It was a trip on the Bluebell Railway and a visit to Wakehurst owned by the National Trust but used and managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

On the move
As we were down in the South East of England I could not resist activating a few SOTA summits and trying to complete G/SE. It would also be chance to meet up with Barry M0IML once again and have a joint activation.

As these are easy summits a bit of QRO was the order of the day so I took my Yasesu FT857 with my lightweight 22Ah LiFePo4.  Val went Geocaching so as usual we started on 60m logging the ever  faithful  band of chasers.  Moving on to 40m we were chased by Juerg for an s2s…thanks Juerg ....and as the chasers dried up we went s2s hunting.
Setting up...22Ah battery in my hand...it was seaside weather :)

Gerald had sent me a text that he was about to set up on summit which eventually resulted in a nice QSO with him before he spotted for his activation…thanks Gerald.

My Log

Barry sending a spot for me...

Unfortunately, Barry could not join me for Botley Hill but gave me directions on where to set-up within the massive activation zone but not far from the actual summit.  Gerald DL/M0WML/p and I had been communicating by text in between summits and we had a rough idea of our respective ETAs.  As I was early I spotted myself for 60m but surprisingly no takers to my CQ SOTA calls? I moved to 40m with a self spot…still no response?  Panic as Gerald was on his summit.  I had checked all the settings on the FT857 as we had been messing around with some of them on the previous summit to get cw operational.  By now Gerald was calling me (5/9+) and I was answering..nothing.  Eureka moment…change the microphone…bingo…Gerald came back with a 5/9…whew!... lucky I always carry a spare mic.  I left Gerald to his pile-up and moved lower down on 40m…thanks to Juerg for another s2s.  I finished the activation with another visit to 60m…more success this time :)
