Windy on top

We arrived early and managed to park next to the Three Shire Stone.  As soon as we got out of the car it was evident that it was going to be very windy on the summit.  Not only that it looked as if the hill-walkers were out in force with some very large parties heading up into the mountains.
My GPS track
It would be busy today
Heading up..rain filled clouds above
Approaching Red Tarn
Others heading for Crinkle Crags?...we would turn right here
Leaving Red Tarn
Having been nearly blown over twice I decide that it was best that we stuck to 2m with Val in charge of the fishing pole…it was obvious that it could not be extended by more than  4 sections.  We hunkered down behind some large boulders.
From our sheltered spot
My first contact was with John G4YSS using The GC0OOO/p callsign  from the summit of Snowdon GW/NW-001 (5/9 each way) and with such good copy we had a nice chat….thanks John…he was cold but didn’t seem to be experiencing the high winds that we were having. With Mark M6VMS (Windermere) once again making my log with a 5/9 signal I was delighted with another two s2s with Caroline and Helen on the Isle of Man…thanks both. After quite a long layoff it was nice to hear Sue G1OHH saying that she had updated the equipment and hoped to be on air a little more often in the coming months although Granny duties could get in the way :)  Once again Geoff WHA/A made the log.

End of activation ?
Taken from the cairn...Lake Windermere in the distance
Oxendale below
Just as we were taking a few selfies a young girl with another two ladies came up to us and asked ‘Are we anywhere near here?  I replied ‘You are on the Pike of Blisco’ ‘How do we get to Red Tarn?.. I replied ‘Just pop over the side there and follow the track down ‘... with that a strong gust of wind came and whipped the map out of her hand..panic..screams...thankfully it went straight up and straight down into a puddle of water where it stuck tight until she retrieved it.  Anyway, they calmed down and offered to take a picture of us both…invitation gratefully accepted then off they went….
Hang on Val
This always seems to happen to me as once again I had packed everything away but as always monitoring the 2m calling frequency on the handheld when I hear James calling from Eilidir Fawr GW/NW-005…he soon heard me and in the log….thanks James.

My activation set up:-  (VHF) Yaesu FT270 (5watts) into a ‘cable tie’ dipole.. Antenna support - 7m Fishing pole much reduced :)
Thanks everyone for the contacts
