G/NP-007 Wild Boar Fell

Clints and Grykes

G/NP-007  Wild Boar Fell

26/07/2015

We left Hawes and headed NW along the A684 picking up the B6259 towards Nateby and parking by the side of the road at SD78269971 preparing to follow part of the Pennine Bridleway.
My GPS track
We headed West towards the ‘bwlch’ at High Dolphinsty then SSW up towards The Nab then cutting SW towards the summit... 3.81km to summit from the car.

Part of the Pennine Bridleway -The Nab-distant centre
The 'bwlch' at High Dolphinsty right..and our ridge towards The Nab on the left
Barry (International Mountain Leader) was in his element here as I had a lesson on the formation of a limestone pavement where the deep fissures are called Grykes and the slabs are called Clints.
The Geology lesson

Nearing The Nab
From 'The Nab' to the summit
It was cold on top and I had to put on an extra layer before setting up behind the cairn which surrounds the Trig point...the opening of the circular cairn was directly facing the wind hence having to stay outside.
 Some protection from the wind
Once again we shared the first contacts on 60m then went our separate ways.

Once again conditions on 40m were terrible with no answers to our calls so Barry moved on to 20m following a spot by me.  I happily played on 2m and had a couple of nice but brief chats.

Daniel s2s
Now panic had set in (not really..) as we had not had an s2s so I looked carefully on RRT and found Daniel OM1DK on OM/TM-032 (Baske)...a few calls and he was in our logs....thanks Daniel. The weather forecast had promised rain and high winds for the afternoon...it was getting colder and we felt a few drops of rain on our faces...time to pull the plug.
Trig and Howgills ..distant
A farmer on his quad passed us on his way up to look at the sheep but as the rain reached us he turned around and stopped to talk. I had just started to put on my water proof trousers when he said “You boys had better be getting off the mountain before the ‘wasser’ comes.  I’m off back down, !***!! the sheep”.  We both laughed.....:)
I managed to get a spot up saying that we had cancelled the next summit so we went to do a ‘recce’ for the parking spot of our last summit of the trip then back down to the Wensleydale Cheese factory in Hawes to sample and purchase a selection of the products...great stuff :)

Thanks for all the contacts and s2s.
