EI/IE-004 – Mount Leinster

EI/IE-004 – Mount Leinster

08/11/2018

Weather was looking good…little did we know (5th and final EI activation)

I had a few 10 pointers lined up but the weather had not been on our side. Another big storm was brewing in the Atlantic and set to hit us on Friday so today (Thursday) would be our only chance to pick up some useful activation points. A local had informed us that the best views would be had from Mount Leinster and the access to the summit from The Nine Stones car park would be easy…he was right about access but totally wrong regarding the view. There is a large car park at Nine Stones and once you pass the locked security gates you have a tarmac service road all the way to the top.

The Nine Stones car park
On our way...plenty of room to pass the locked gate when you are walking or with a bike

We had already put on our wet weather gear as we could see that we were in for a wet summit. It’s 2.65km to the summit which took us 1hr 6 minutes.

Heading up the summit and into the mist and rain

Hope we don't have any of that today!

The mast and complex coming into view

I just had to touch the trig...could hardly stand with the ferocity of the wind

Due to the severity of the wind I had to drop the mast to around 5m but we managed to hide ourselves in a deep depression in the ground just below the entrance to the Communications complex.  Another good run on 60m with chasers eager to get the 10 points including a brief chat with many….thanks once again everyone.

Hiding out of the wind

A quick link removal and I was away on 40m. I had avoided putting up the 80m coils as the antenna was doing all sorts of gyrations. Great to get Juerg in the log for an s2s once again…Juerg always seems to be on a mountain :)

We were both feeling the cold by now so a quick pack up and we were heading down hill and soon nice and warm, happy with the activation but disappointed that this would be our last  EI activation and that we hadn’t been able to see the wonderful views that Mount Leinster has to offer…we will be back.
My activation set-up

HF) Elecraft KX2 (10 watts) and 4Ah LiPo

Antenna - 3 band link dipole (60/40/20 (+15m extensions +80m loading coils)

Antenna support - 7m Fishing pole.

Thanks everyone for the contacts during my EI trip
