EI/IE-053 Knocknamuck

EI/IE-053 Knocknamuck

05/11/2018

A roadside activation (2nd EI activation)

Another dismal day with mist and rain so Knocknamuck looked like a good choice for a short activation with only a few hundred meters to the summit.  Well, I could have walked to the top but there were some rather official looking signs and heavy gates stopping me from doing this. Not wishing to trespass in a foreign country I set myself up outside the gates and in the AZ.

Playing it safe...staying outside the gates

Straight on to 60m with my chosen frequency of the week 5.363Mhz which is one of those on the WRC-15 list that I was allowed to use in Ireland. I qualified the summit in 4 minutes with a brief chat to all those that called me.

7m pole again today

A quick addition of the 80m coils and I was away with good signals from most stations. It also gave a chance for Karl M3FEH to get the summit as he is not allowed on 60m.

Quite a few mini pile-ups

It was nice to get an s2s with Juerg with the two Dons, RQL and PLP getting the hat-trick of contacts for working me on the three bands….thanks everyone.

It was getting rather damp so I pulled the plug although the brolley was not to far away. For all my activations I was using ‘write in the rain’ paper with my usual 2B pencil which is just the right hardness.

From Knocknamuck we headed East to see if we could have a late lunch in Kilkenny as by now the rain had really set in for the day.

My activation set-up

HF) Elecraft KX2 (10 watts) and 4Ah LiPo.

Antenna - 3 band link dipole (60/40/20 (+15m extensions +80m loading coils).

Antenna support - 7m Fishing pole.

Thanks everyone for the contacts
