GW/MW-038 Disgwylfa Fawr

Loads of surprises on this one

GW/MW-038 Disgwylfa Fawr

24/02/2017...please read previous report

Now I hadn’t alerted for this one although I hinted in my Alert for Pen y Garn that I might do another summit later in the afternoon.  I know there is always a good phone signal on Disgwylfa so it would be easy to self-spot.
My GPS track.
Heading towards the summit
There was strong cold breeze blowing so we dropped down on the North side of the small cairn. As I set up  the nice lady on RRT notified me that John  GW4YTJ/p was on Corndon Hill so I was soon dialling in his frequency on the  FT270…a surprise s2s so thanks John.
Out of the wind with Dinas reservoir in the distance

I was quickly into a nice pile-up on 80m which was working well as opposed to my previous activation…no woodpecker this time. Anyway, the second surprise was that the fishing pole sections suddenly collapsed and I saw  one of my 80m coils flying through the air and somebody saying ‘hello’  We had a visitor and his dog.  He  apologised for his dog’s antics and as I explained SOTA to him and replaced the coils and the pole at the same time I was conscious of the remaining chasers waiting on the band. To add to the confusion John XOT/p was calling ‘CQ SOTA’ on 2m…he was quickly in the log…thanks John.  I soon gave the remaining chasers the summit on 80m….thanks for your patience.

Looking towards Drosgol MW-008 and Banc Llechwedd Mawr MW-009

Working a pile-up

A spot was up for Adrian now on Mynydd Troed GW/SW-009 so a quick change to 60m and he was in the log with my third s2s of the day.  Adrian after his activation of Mynydd Llangorse later in the day would be within 1 point of Mountain Goat so watch this space……

A good run on 60m ended my activation of Disgwylfa Fawr  so we packed up and made our way back down to the valley below  for yet another surprise…
On our way down then......
This turned out to be the gentleman without his dog this time  :)

My activation set up:-  (HF) Yaesu FT817 (5 watts) (4Ah LiPo),  UK-MX 50M linear (for 817) and (4Ah LiPo),  3 band link dipole (60/40/20 (+15m extensions +80m loading coils),  (VHF) Yaesu FT270 (5watts) into a ‘cable tie’ dipole.. Antenna support - 7m Fishing pole.

Thanks everyone for the contacts

73 Allan GW4VPX
