Sunshine again
Skiddaw G/LD-004 (10 points for SOTA)
05/09/2015
Once again we had booked into 2 Cambridge Villas, Ambleside
with Stephen and Jeanette and after an early breakfast we headed for
Ormathwaite just North of Keswick and the car park at NY2808 2533. At this time
of the year it is essential to get here early as this approach to Skiddaw is
very popular and we only just managed to bag one of the last safe parking
spots.
It’s a relatively easy 5.10km
walk to the summit although the first few Kms are quite steep but there are
numerous photographic opportunities to break up the journey.

We were glad of a cooling breeze as the sun was shining down
with some ferocity..we were not complaining, however, what part would it play
in our quest for a few contacts on the bands today? We were not to be
disappointed and started our activation with an s2s with Michael G0HIO/p on
Little Mell Fell G/LD-037.... it’s rare to hear Michael on 2m as he prefers
CW...thanks Michael. With a quick hello from both of us to John G0TDM in
Penrith (5/9++) we picked up another s2s with Robin GM7PKT/p on GM/SS-066 Beinn a’Mhanaich...thanks Robin. Next up was Geoff GM4WHA/M who had gone
mobile to get a contact with Barry on 23cms...Barry duly complied and another
23cms contact in their logs. Geoff contacted us on no less than 4 bands..he was
having a fun day on the radio today :)
M0IML/p engrossed in his HF activation
Whilst Barry went on to HF I continued on 2m as I had been
spotted resulting in a steady stream of chasers and some nice chats as usual...

Despite the sun it was now getting chilly
As we had alerted for Binsey G/LD-041 which was across the
valley but would entail a short car journey we decided to ‘pull the plug’ and
head down.
Keswick and Derwent Water....SOTA summits in the distance
On our way down we were
approached by John 2E0OAK/p on his way up to Skiddaw to activate the summit. We had a brief chat, explained that we were on
our way to Binsey to which he replied that he would wait on summit until we
arrived there and get an s2s with us....fantastic....thank you John.
LD activation set up for both of us:- (HF) Yaesu FT817 + LDG Z817 Autotuner, 5 band link dipole (60/40/20/15/10), (VHF) Yaesu FT270 (5watts) into a ‘cable tie’ dipole.. Antenna support - 7m Fishing pole.
Thanks everyone for
the contacts and the spots.....Binsey report to follow
