Gold s2s (2500 points)
Fairfield G/LD-007 (8 points for SOTA)
06/09/2015
We had looked forward to today as we had planned to leave
our car in our overnight car park and walk from Ambleside to Fairfield G/LD-007
then activate St Sunday Crag G/LD-010. Now things didn’t go quite to plan as the
long 9.94km walk (uphill as usual) and the unusually hot conditions slowed us
down.
My GPS track. Ambleside to Fairfield
Looking back..nearly at the top
We were late on summit but there
was a bonus....Michael G0HIO/p was calling from St Sunday Crag....needless to
say he was quickly in our logs so thank you Michael. Like us he and his XYL had suffered from the
heat and were also very late on summit.
St Sunday Crag from Fairfield
By this time we had done some mental
calculations and worked out that we would have to scrub our visit to St Sunday
Crag as it would mean part of our descent would possibly be at dusk or even in
the dark.
Happy on HF :)
I shared the next contact with
Barry as I wanted Don G0RQL’s Maidenhead
Locator for my ARPOC Award..thanking Don
I moved on to 2m with Sue G1OHH being next in my log. A good run of chasers followed but as I signed off with John GW4ZPL/p near Caernarvon
and gave a final call RRT notified me that Jonathan GW2HFR/p was on Snowdon GW/NW-001
and calling on 60m. Now Barry was chatting to Brian ZRP on 23cms but we soon
focused our attention on this s2s. With 10 s2s points in the bag we thanked
Jonathan who like us had been very late on summit...it wasn’t until I arrived
back home that I realised that Jonathan had tipped me over the 2500 s2s points
(Gold).....thanks Jonathan.

Just to prove I was there :)
The rest of my activation was taken dipping in and out of
the various bands with Barry, taking a few photos and
keeping an eye on RRT which resulted in some quality contacts in the end..

Now Barry had a reasonable number of contacts on 60/40 and 20m with quite a few regular
chasers but our final 4 contacts were magical with Lutz then Geoff and Nick on
the Mourne Mountains ending with John TQE on Selworthy Beacon..thanks
everybody.
A rather cloudy horizon
We had a long journey back down to Ambleside so instead of
going back the way we came we decided on the classic Fairfield horseshoe route
and returned via Great Rigg, Heron Pike towards Rydal then through Rydal Park
into Ambleside (9.17km).
Fairfield to Ambleside GPS
Our route down along the ridge
Still a long way to go
Catalina Flying Boat on it's way back from an Air Display
Our route took us through Rydal Hall and Park
You may notice from my GPS track that we did not end
up back at the start of our journey because as we were a little de-hydrated we
headed straight for ‘The Unicorn’ including rucksacks and dirty boots..we were hungry
:) Perfect end to an eventful day.
LD activation set up for both of us:- (HF) Yaesu FT817 + LDG Z817 Autotuner, 5 band link dipole (60/40/20/15/10), (VHF) Yaesu FT270 (5watts) into a
‘cable tie’ dipole.. Antenna support - 7m Fishing pole.
Thanks everyone for
the contacts and the spots. Stoney
Cove Pike report tomorrow.
