Red Screes G/LD-017

Surprise visitor

Red Screes G/LD-017

04/09/2015

Even after a long drive North for both of us we arrived at the summit of Red Screes in 58 minutes after parking our cars in the Kirkstone Inn Car Park. 1.05km straight up the side.
My GPS Track
SAR helicopter...let's hope it's on a training mission
The ascent brought back memories of the words that the late Colin G4UXH had told me before I went up the last time “follow the yellow arrow Allan”.....found it again :)
The little yellow arrow pointing the way close to the top..center

We were both immediately into an s2s with Nick and Geoff on GI/MM-015 Slievenalargy in the Mourne Mountains....perfect timing and thank you both.  I was really happy as I had knocked together a 2m dipole which I know call my ‘Cable Tie Dipole’ as it mainly consists of cable ties.  I was fed up with my plastic tube dipole which was heavier and usually got caught up in trees on my way to a summit.
 The cable tie dipole..more later
From the outset this dipole was performing well with Phil G4OBK being surprised that he had heard me up all the way from Pickering. (more on the dipole in the next blog).

After the initial joint contacts on 2m Barry was away on 40m with a grand total of 4 contacts..this band was in a terrible state once again. I passed on a message to Barry that Brian G4ZRP was waiting for him on 23cms so off he went on his travels around the summit calling looking for the best position to talk to Brian...job done.  By this time John GW4ZPL/p wanted to have a word with Barry then a quick change of links and he was on 60m ending the activation with a few WAB chasers on 40m.

 Barry's log above
We were both happy with the results and really looking forward to the weekend, however, thoughts were now turning to our evening meal at The Unicorn in Ambleside :)
Bill G4WSB, Barry M0IML, Allan G4VPX
When we reached the car park Barry was taken by surprise at the outstretched hand of Bill G4WSB who had been patiently watching us descend. Although we knew Bill was activating in the area it was nice to meet up and have a chat...thanks Bill.

Thanks everyone for the contacts and to those that spotted us. Four more reports to follow over the next few days.

73 Allan GW4VPX and Barry M0IML
