GW/MW-004 - Pen y Garn
06/01/2015
06/01/2015
With a promise of a break in the weather in the afternoon
and both Rod M0JLA and Viki M6WBA out on the hills in G/WB I made a late entry
on the Alerts and decided on Pen y Garn which has a nice take off for VHF and a
hollow cairn for protection against the elements. Leaving the sunshine of the Teify valley I
made my way up to the gloom, wind and rain of my chosen summit.
The circular cairn..good protection from the elements
Setting up my ‘office’ and a very much lowered fishing pole
inside the cairn I went straight on to 40m as Alerted without using RRT as
there was no phone signal in the cairn today.
A listen and quite a few calls of “Is this frequency in use and the customary
CQ SoTA” on 7.118 brought an answer from Andy G8MIA and a promise of a spot –
thanks Andy. A pile-up ensued but also the band was changing and bringing with
it a number of Continental qso’s obviously not chasing the summit. Well done
everyone who made my log as it was no doubt difficult at times so I hope I
didn’t miss anyone, although I did hear Francois ON5SWA calling but we never
made the link - sorry Francois.

I had also Alerted the fact that there was a Trig-point on
the summit TP1735 (Bryn Garw) so there were a few extra callers in the pile-up.
Notice that the SOTA summit name is different to the Trig name and you also
have to check the SOTA OS map reference against the WAB Trig list to make sure
you have the correct details and location.
With no more callers I went QRT on 40m stating that I would
be on WAB ‘net’ shortly (40m again). This was a timely break in proceedings as
both Rod and Viki popped up on 2m and into the log for an s2s from G/WB-002 –
thank you both.

It was cold but I decided to take the plunge and call into
the WAB ‘net’ . I was welcomed, given
priority and logged 23 stations in 13 minutes – thanks guys.

The 'office'
On finishing with the WAB ‘net’ I gave a quick call on 2m
and found Mal GW6OVD/m parked up in the lay-by next to Craig y Llyn GW/SW-10and
looking for me, Rod and Viki – thanks for the contact Mal. I finished my activation with my friend Aled
in Newchapel who was on his dinner break :)

Apologies for the shortage of pictures but I had forgotten
my camera at home and had to resort to the camera on the phone.
Thanks for all the
contacts and I’m looking forward to the next time.
