GW/MW-038 – Disgwylfa Fawr

The promise of a rain free afternoon prompted me to make a
last minute Alert on Sotawatch. Within two
hours I was on the summit of
Disgwylfa Fawr setting up my 40/20
linked dipole just below the summit cairn and out of reach of most of the
strong wind.

As this was going to be a short activation I had posted that I
would only be qrv on 40m so using RRT and the sms facility I was quickly into
the usual but orderly pile-up of chasers. Band conditions were surprisingly
good with the majority being 5/9 and many + signals.
The office
Most notable was that of
Paul M0TVU running 1 watt (5/8) which made me feel quite QRO with my 5
watts from the FT817 :) Fifteen minutes
saw 30 chasers in the log so with quite a few ‘last calls’ and asking Mike
G6TUH to place a spot thanking the chasers I pulled the plug.

I stopped briefly in Ponterwyd to take a few pictures of the
old bridge that spans the River Rheidol which winds it’s way down from Nant y
Moch reservoir and meets up with the Afon Castell. In fact there are quite a few bridges here
but the original narrow bridge being the most picturesque.
One of the many bridges in Ponterwyd
The picture below shows my FT817 and all the necessary activation accessories including 4Ah LiPo safe
and sound in a small insulated picnic bag which is also housed in a dry bag
(Steve MW0BBU’s idea).
Thanks to everybody for another successful activation with a
few more winter bonus points in the bag :)
