Chasing s2s and
MW0WML/p
GW/MW-029 -Hafod
Ithel
14/Mar/2015
With Gerald MW0WML/p out on ‘my patch’ I decided to activate
Hafod Ithel and then try and meet up with him and Sue somewhere during the
afternoon. Although it would only give
me one point for SOTA there were many s2s possibilities during the morning and
I didn’t have any more winter bonus summits left in close proximity to my QTH.
It was a reasonable day but in the distance I could see snow
on GW/MW-001 Pen-Pumlumon Fawr so Gerald would have a nice start to his day’s
activations.
I’d already arranged with Roy GW6DGU that I would give him a call,
so after a brief QSO on 2m I told him that I would be moving to 60m and as RRT
is now working I told him I would self spot.. An immediate response on 60m from
Mark G0VOF who was busy with some paperwork but monitoring the frequency,
however, in the middle of the chat Jim EI9GLB came up on 2m so I asked Mark to
hold the frequency whilst I gave Jim the summit..good take off from Hafod Ithel
into EI.

Back onto 60m and I was away with a good run of 16 chasers

As I was next to the Trig I decided to call in on the WAB
net and with Brian G0BFJ as net controller I had a run of 20 chasers eager for
the trig which I believe was its first activation for the new award.

GW/MW-001 taken on my way to meet Gerald
RRT informed me that Nick G4OOE/p was on G/TW-003 Gisborough
Moor so a quick s2s call and we made the contact...thanks Nick. This prompted
me to get going on 40m once again and 22 chasers made the log including another
s2s with Jack GM4COX/p on GM/SS-049 Culter Fell ...thanks Jack.

With no more callers I listened on 2m in the hope that
Gerald was on his summit but was pleasantly surprised when Matt GW8XYJ/p came
up with a really good signal from GW/MW-010 Gwaunceste Hill and on my ‘to do’
list for the end of the year....thanks for the nice chat Matt and looking
forward to seeing you when you come down this way. A call from Aled MW3DLA down in New Chapel but for some reason it was a difficult contact
so we didn’t have much of a chance for a decent QSO.

Having brought my coffee and sandwiches I decided to hang
around for Gerald who eventually made it into my log with another s2s from
GW/MW-001 Pen-Pumlumon Fawr . I told him
that I would try and meet up with him as he crossed from GW/MW-001 to GW/MW-007
Banc Llechwedd mawr GW/MW/007. It was a
good 30 minute cross-country journey for me by car but I had calculated I would
get there in time. I met up with Sue just above Maesnant but there was no sign
of Gerald. It transpired that he had
already crossed the Afon Hyddgen getting
his feet wet in the process by missing the new bridge and taking a different
route to the normal approach. To cut a long story short I hung around for the
rest of the afternoon giving him his first contact (and directions) on both Banc
Llechwedd mawr and Drosgol GW/MW-008 before meeting up with him just before it
got dark.
Thanks to all the chasers and activators and it was
especially pleasurable to meet up with Gerald and Sue for the first time. Till the next time.....
73 Allan GW4VPX
