Happy New Year activation

I knew it was going to be a little damp but not as bad as it turned out to be. Visibility was down to 25m or so when I arrived at the car park and the mist was already settling as water on my clothes as soon as I got out of the car….full waterproofs would be the order of the day...again.

Wet and misty - SN 075321

Nearing the boggy bits..no views from the Preseli mountains today

I set up in the ‘bomb hole’ near to the trig and decided that the bothy bag would have to be used as it was now raining.  The radio made up for the weather and I was soon chatting to friends having put up a spot on Sotawatch.

7m pole today

It was great to get Andrew and Richard in the log from Fan Fawr but the 2m contacts came to an abrupt end…late risers due to New Year parties methinks :)  60m was busy with the usual chasers making my log as well as calls from two Worked All Britain special event callsigns..GB9WAB and GB50WAB..celebrating 50 years of WAB this year.

Good run of chasers on 60m

60m went quiet then suddenly Adrian popped up on 2m from Stipperstones and another s2s was in the log..thanks Adrian. I put on the loading coils for 80m but it was tough going. Nice to hear Karl with his new callsign coming through so clearly … a few extra watts in use today I'd say :)

Checking the weather

I was really surprised when I heard Mark calling on 2m from the Lake District and he was soon in the log…nice one Mark. This started a mini-pile up with a few friends calling in to wish me a Happy New Year.  I poured myself a cup of coffee and tackled a nice sandwich when suddenly Mike YYY called from Winter Hill..another good clear s2s and a chat…thanks Mike. Back to the coffee then I decided to call Roy to wish him a HNY which brought Michael from Kilkenny to my log and a nice chat once again.  Derek from near Swansea called and shortly afterwards a flurry of s2s with Martin on Brown Clee Hill, Andrew and Richard on Pen y Fan and Phil and Gillian on Great Rhos…thanks everyone.

Heading down

It was still raining  and misty as I packed up but I had been reasonably dry under the bothy bag having had a thoroughly enjoyable time activating my first SOTA summit of 2019.

My activation set-up

VHF:- Yaesu FT270 with and dipole

Antenna - 3 band link dipole (60/40/20 (+15m extensions +80m loading coils)
