GW/NW-032 Carnedd y Filiast
26/05/2017
On our way home
We left Llangollen after a nice breakfast at The Royal
Hotel. I’d had a good mid-week deal on 2
nights here so will probably return one day, provided there’s a discount again :)
Our hotel overlooking the river Dee
The river Dee from the bridge in Llangollen
Our target summit for the journey home was Carnedd y Filiast….it would be a long uphill walk
on a very warm day.….(6.22 km)
Park at SH 859410..room for at least 2 cars by the main road..
Track by Simon G4TJC (SOTA Mapping project)

Start of the track to the summit
Arenig Fawr and Arenig Fach from the track on the way up
Might be difficult to cross this ford in wet conditions
The summit ahead..
Although it was a nice day there was a very strong wind
blowing so we dropped down just below the Trig and Cairn opting to strap the
fishing pole to the fence. 60m would be
my first band.
Snowdon mountain range in the distance
Strong wind blowing the mast
Busy on HF

I had some really good s2s starting with Mike on Glyder Fawr
for 10 points, Carolyn and Helen on Hightown Hill in Scotland (1 point), Juerg
who called me from Wisenberg in Switzerland (2 points) ending with Mike again now on Y
Garn for 8 points…thanks everyone. I
tried 20m with the linear on but there were no takers even with a spot….the
band was dead. After 20m I packed up
aware that we had a very long walk back to the car (6.22 km) plus the 1hr and 30 minutes drive home.
Saw this on the way down...hooded monk?? spooky... may have been there on the way up :)
My activation set up:- (HF) Yaesu FT817 (5 watts)
(4Ah LiPo), UK-MX 50M linear (for 817) and (4Ah LiPo), 3 band link
dipole (60/40/20 (+15m extensions +80m extensions), (VHF) Yaesu
FT270 (5watts) into a ‘cable tie’ dipole.. Antenna
support - 7m Fishing pole.
Thanks everyone for
the contacts
