GW/NW-052 Mynydd Cwmcelli

GW/NW-052  Mynydd Cwmcelli

09/10/2016

Another unique and a complete for me today

I had chased 6 activators on this one and if I’m not mistaken most of them were contacts with Ricky MW6GWR who sadly has not been heard on the bands for some time.  It’s 1.76km to the summit from a parking spot at SH813105…...just follow forestry road through the gate for a few hundred meters then bear right up a narrow track which heads straight for the summit.
GPX track to the summit (MW0WML)
Park here... SH813105...gate in view
Follow the track around to the left climbing gradually through the forest
Follow the track as it gently climbs up and around the base of the summit then take another narrow grass trail diagonally up the side with the scar created by off road motor bikes to your right.
Take the diagonal trail up the side...note the scar as mentioned previously

Thanks to Gerald MW0WML a GPX of this route is available on the SOTA mapping website…it’s spot on.

The top of Mynydd Cwmcelli..thought to be an old hill fort
It was a lovely morning and quite warm in the sun so Val was happy and soon settled down to enjoying the warmth and the chatter of a SOTA activation :)
Val enjoying the sunshine
Frank RMD was first in the log for 60m with a promise of a spot which resulted in a steady stream of regular chasers with good signal reports both ways…thanks everyone.

It was nice to get James M0JCQ/p  in the log from Wendover Woods G/CE-005… so thank you James for popping down from 40m  to make the s2s. Because Martyn M1MAJ had given me a low signal report I had flicked the linear on which resulted in a comment of “you’ve switched something on?” but unfortunately I forgot to turn it off for 40m resulting in one big pileup but also an s2s with Juerg…thanks for calling me Juerg.
Yet another pile-up :)

2m dipole high on the pole today..no contacts though...
VPX/p calling on 2m
It finally went quiet but by this time the nice lady on RRT was informing me that Rob RQJ/p was on Watch Hill G/LD-054 so a quick change of links back to 60m and he was in the log…thanks Rob. It was fortunate that I was heading for 20m when another s2s came up on RRT and Frederico was soon in the log.  I soon settled down to work the chasers on 20m with a couple of nice contacts once again from George N1GB and Bill W1OW from the USA. I ended my activation by hanging around on summit for an s2s with Gerald WML who was up in Scotland picking up Bill WSB over in Ireland whilst we waited.

We were soon on our way down and looking forward to some coffee and sandwiches back at the car. I had booked a night at the Ivy House in Dolgellau as we would be on Maesglase the following day….another unique and complete ready and waiting :)

My activation set up:-  (HF) Yaesu FT817 (5 watts) (4Ah LiPo),  UK-MX 50M linear (for 817) and 12V 4 Ah LiPO battery,  3 band link dipole (60/40/20 (+15m+80m extensions),  (VHF) Yaesu FT270 (5watts) into a ‘cable tie’ dipole.. Antenna support - 7m Fishing pole.

Thanks everyone for the contacts

73 Allan GW4VPX
