GW/NW-017
& GW/NW-041
Y Llethr and
Moelfre
21/10/2016
It was only
10 minutes from our Hotel ..The Ty Mawr in Llanbedr to the parking spot for
both Y Llethr and Moelfre at SH 629257. We had decided that as the weather was
so nice we would try and do the double.
My GPS of the double
It’s 4.7km (2.83 miles) to the summit of Y Llethr so it would have to be an early start if we were going to activate the two.
From the parking spot..Rhinog Fawr, Rhinog Fach and Y Llethr on the right (our summit)
Head for the gate at SH 636246
At the Gate....head East from the gate to pick up another wall at SH 644247
Lleyn Peninsula
Follow the wall to until you reach a Ladder stile which leads to the summit
Over the ladder stile at SH 660255 and head for the summit
Diffwys in the distance...final sprint to the summit..not...
Cloud free Snowdon GW/NW-001
Convenient post to bungee the pole
I opened up the activation with
an s2s with David G0EVV/p on G/TW-005 Normanby Top then settled down to work an
orderly pile-up on 60m…great signals all
round.

Another pile-up
A text from
Victor GI4ONL telling me that Dave and Nick were on the summit of GI/MM-001
Slieve Donald and expecting my call…they were soon in the log…thanks
everyone. As you can see below my visit
to 40m was a marathon but I must say the pile-up was an orderly one giving me a
chance to say a few words to many of the chasers…thanks everyone.

Rhinog fach with Trawsfynydd reservoir in the distance
Messy office today
I debated
whether or not to go on to 20m as 40m had been quite a long session and we were
aware that Moelfre was also beckoning
from across the other side of the bwlch. I decided to give it a go as I had
Alerted the fact that I would be visiting the band.

It all
started out so well but towards the end it became unpleasant with tuning and
continual calling on my frequency and the’ Who are you?’ question popping up which
meant these were no longer SOTA chasers.
I announced QRT and pulled the plug…….we packed up and headed down hill
and towards Moelfre.
Back at the gate..true SOTA style ..we went straight up following the wall up to Moelfre
Slight detour...avoiding the large boulders
At last...the ladder stile leading to the summit cairn
Slight detour...avoiding the large boulders
At last...the ladder stile leading to the summit cairn
As we
reached the summit of Moelfre I made the decision just to use the 60m band and
give a few calls on 2m. I soon qualified the summit as the sun was setting low
on the horizon.

Time to go..Cardigan Bay in the distance
Back over the ladder stile...Cadair Idris from Moelfre
It was gone 18:00 BST by the time we reached the car, just as the sun cast a nice red glow on the Rhinogs
My activation set up:- (HF) Yaesu
FT817 (5 watts) (4Ah LiPo), UK-MX 50M linear (for 817) on 20m using
12V 4 Ah LiPO battery, 3 band link dipole (60/40/20 (+15m+80m
extensions), (VHF) Yaesu FT270 (5watts) into a ‘cable
tie’ dipole.. Antenna support - 7m Fishing pole.
Thanks everyone for
the contacts
