The classic
double
GW/SW-009
and GW/SW-015
Mynydd Troed
and Mynydd Llangorse
24/02/2016
We parked at
SO 16072830. Make sure you arrive early as there is very limited space. This is
a classic double as you can activate
Mynydd Troed first then come back to the car for a bite to eat then head
up to Mynydd Llangorse. Do these in winter bonus time and you will earn 12
points.
On the way up
Llangorse lake and Pen y Fan in the distance
Val on the 'steps'
Get's easier
Mynydd
Troed
No spot just
a quick call on 5.398.5 brought Rod and Bill to the log then a steady stream of
chasers once I had been spotted. I had some nice chats with most of them…60m
was really working well today.

Just below the trig and out of the wind
Time to move
on and I announced a QSY to 40m once I had changed the links. A text with a
frequency and then a spot from Mike G6TUH enabled me to get going
quickly…thanks Mike. I think I had landed on a frequency next to Phil OBK who
was in Scotland and he soon pounced on me for the s2s…thanks Phil. A nice orderly
pile-up followed with a chance to have a few words with most of the stations
including many WAB chasers who wanted the Trig and the square…thanks everyone..
a very pleasurable visit to 40m

Time to pack
up but not before taking pictures of the two gliders that had been flying
around during the activation including a ‘wing waggle’ from the tow plane as he
sped down to the airfield in response to my wave…great stuff :)
Air display
Mynydd
Llangorse
Val and I
were on target for getting on to Llangorse at my alerted time so a quick coffee
and something to eat back at the car ensured some extra energy for the steep
climb into the activation zone.
'Been there, done that'..Mynydd Troed across the valley
Llangorse Lake and PyF on our way up
As we approached the activation zone I looked at
my watch and made a decision to head for the trig which is 1.5km to the south of
the North edge of the SOTA AZ…well worth the effort on such a glorious day.
The trig on Mynydd Llangorse..Pen y Fan in the distance
It was a
busy summit so I set up a few meters away from the trig with a low wall/hedge
to protect us from a cold Northerly wind. As I set up I was amazed to hear Pete
GW4ISJ/p calling me from Waun Fach SW-002 so thanks Pete for that unexpected
s2s…. I suppose we could have waved at each other as well if we had binoculars
:)
Waun Fach GW/SW-002 behind me
As soon as I was finished with Pete I went straight to 5.398.5 with Brian G8ADD
giving me the all clear and that the frequency was mine…thanks Brian for the QSO.
Next in was Colin (G8TMV) using the callsign of GB2IWM who seems to be making a
habit of chasing me from the Imperial War Museum…thanks Colin. Once again a
run of regular chasers with some chasing
the trig and square including Dave G4IAR who is having great fun with his new
60m dipole.

Pile-up
It was soon
time to move to 40m and once again Mike sent me a frequency and I was away
again with a nice pile-up. I did have the linear ready as I thought the band
might have changed but it was not needed..cracking signals from everyone. Once
again Phil OBK called me from Scotland for an s2s. Today our activations were
coinciding nicely which does not happen often. Phil was complaining that it was
snowing so I promptly replied that he should have been in Wales enjoying the
sunshine :)…thanks Phil.

It was a
busy but enjoyable half hour and I soon filled a few pages in the log book. I
had quite a few late callers until I finally made an announcement that I was
pulling the plug…thanks everybody for another enjoyable activation.
Looking back at the trig
Heading back..Mynydd Troed in the distance
Heading back...car in the valley below
End of a perfect activation
My activation set up:- (HF)
Yaesu FT817 (5 watts) (4Ah LiPo), 3 band link dipole (60/40/20) (VHF) Yaesu FT270 (5watts)
Thanks everyone for the contacts
and spots
