GW/MW-001 (Plynlimon-Pen Pumlumon Fawr)

With the weatherman forecasting another glorious day I decided to activate GW/MW-001 for the second time this year but also ensuring that my XYL Val, Len and Gwyneth tagged along to enjoy the views from the top.

We parked our car in the cark park (still £5)at Eisteddfa Gurig and headed for the gate signposted ‘All walks’ following the track which leads to SN795857 where you head NNE on to the moorland towards the summit.

Misty start to the journey

A misty start but conditions were improving as I started my activation from within the cairn on the summit. I failed to spot for 60m and my calls went unanswered and even calling on a noisy 7.118Mhz brought no response. 7.123Mhz  was quiet so I moved outside the cairn and sent another spot or two via RRT..bingo..a nice pileup of regular chasers...thanks everybody including the many WAB chasers who wanted the Trig and square although I had activated from here in January ...no doubt some had missed me then...

Now I’ve been up on this summit so many times but never done the circular route and as the mist had cleared and it was now a glorious day we decided to go back via the southerly route walking down along the ridge towards the corner of the forestry at SN784851 and the track (which you pick up just before the forestry) which takes you back to the farm and car park.

On the way home we stopped for a cup of tea at the Vale of Rheidol narrow gauge railway station (Devil’s Bridge terminus)...fantastic  end to another glorious day.
