GW/SW-006 Fan Gyhirych

 Cold but sunny....

GW/SW-006 Fan Gyhirych

04/02/2015

Another cold but sunny day was promised so Fan Gyhirych was the target. It's a long trek on the track leading towards the spot where you turn off the track and on to the moorland.. The closer I got to this point the more the road disappeared in snow drifts thoughts drifted to snowshoes once more.
Fan Gyhirych
Towards Fan Brycheiniog
The sun was shining but there was a strong wind on top as I approached the trig and as there is not much in the way of shelter on the summit I elected to hunker down by the trig in the freezing temperature. I put on extra layers and I was ready for action.  After I bungeed the pole to the trig I failed to erect the pole to it's full extent due to the wind.
Not much protection on this one
My FT270 handheld burst into life with a call from Mal GW6OVD/M saying that he was on his way to Craig Y Llyn and hoping for an s2s with me - great stuff :) I had already sent a text to Mike G6TUH saying that I would be QRV in 5 minutes and just as I was hunting around for a clear frequency he replied via text that 7.108 was free and very soon my activation was underway after Mike's spot kicked in - thanks Mike.

A steady stream of chasers followed with Barry M0IML even going mobile in order to get a contact with me and Phil GM4OBK/p up in Scotland. Once again today I never did get an s2s with Phil. 25 chasers made the log so with a few 'last calls' I prepared to move to the WAB net to give them the Trig. (TP3106 Fan Gyhirych). A call to Mal on 2m brought my one and only s2s but valuable points nevertheless - thanks Mal.

Hiding behind the trig
With Ken G0FEX as controller I quickly logged 16 contacts in 8 minutes on the WAB net with many wanting the WAB square and Trig - thanks everyone.

Ready to head down hill
A quick call to Mal to inform him that I was packing up brought a response from Trevor GW4RVA in Carmarthen resulting in a brief QSO and another with Terry 2W0MFD in Brecon.

It was nice to talk to Mal on the way down and he informed me that he had been unable to hear Phil in Scotland so band conditions were not that good. Thanks everyone for the contacts making it an enjoyable activation once again despite cold.
