GW/SW-002 – Waun Fach
20/03/2019
John GW4TQE/p Mountain Goat
John and I have done a few joint activations and I
told him that I would join him for his Mountain Goat activation. The day
arrived and John had chosen Waun Fach as he had noticed I had not done it this
year.
Our GPS track
Happy John but would it be a misty journey?
It’s a bit of a slog up from SO185311 and over Y Grib but we
made the summit in 1hr 52 minutes whereas in 2018 Val and I took 1hr 58 minutes….not
bad going Val.
Mist clearing as we approach Y Grib
Pen y Fan and others popping up out of the mist
I let John set up his Slim Jim and sent a spot to Sotawatch. It produced
an instantaneous pile-up and Viki M6BWA/P had the honour of being his fourth contact
for Mountin Goat..well done John and thanks to all the chasers for their response.
Ready for the MG activation
Viki M6BWA/p in the log for fourth contact just beating Rod M0JLA/p
Mountain Goat with badge
I had to get in on the celebration

My 2m log
I did get in on the action when a few s2s came up
but eventual I set up HF and was away on 60m with Rod being the first in my
log. He had been waiting for me on 5.3715 which was his and my alerted
frequencies…thanks Rod. 60m was really
working well and a nice pile-up followed
with 2 WAB special event stations calling in....thanks everyone.

My 60m log
Relegated to sit on the peat :)
Although 80m was working it wasn’t as good as 60m as
some of the return chasers gave me lower signal strength report but
nevertheless 13 chasers made my log with some cracking signals from the South
East of England.

My 80m log
John had packed away so when there was no response
to my ‘final calls’ I pulled the plug as John was keen to activate Fan Nedd
before heading for his B&B. A thoroughly enjoyable day not only by due the fact
that John had got his Mountain Goat but also that the sun had shone with hardly
any breeze…..spring is here?
My
activation set-up
HF:- Elecraft KX2 (10 watts) and 4Ah LiPo
Antenna - 3 band link dipole (60/40/20 (+15m extensions +80m
loading coils)
Antenna support – 5m Fishing pole
Thanks everyone for
the contacts
