Pegwn Mawr GW/MW-006
13/12/2015
Following the track as
described by Gerald MW0MWL in the SOTA Mapping Project ( http://www.sotamaps.org/tracks.php
) Val and I arrived at the cattle grid at SO 0227 8124 but could barely see the
trig in the mist and rain.
Route by Gerald MW0WML
Trig, Cairn and sheep
However, it was a blessing today that the high winds
we have been having of late had subsided so umbrellas could be used for the
activation.I quickly qualified the summit on 60m and announced I would be
moving to 40m shortly so thanks to all who enabled me to qualify the summit so
quickly and for those brief chats :)

Ghostly wind turbines beyond GW4VPX/p
Knowing there was a ‘contest
type activity’ on 40m I had packed the linear in the bag so out it came and was
quickly plugged in. After an initial few minutes of trying to find a reasonably
clear frequency (moved twice) I soon settled down to a steady flow of chasers
despite a lot of QRM and frequency high-jacking attempts :)

Happy under the umbrella
I was made aware with a ‘heads
up’ that Colwyn MM0YCJ/p was on GM/WS-146, however, I was still in the middle
of my pile-up….thankfully Colwyn called me and he was in the log with my one
and only s2s…thanks Colwyn.

Busy on 40m
As the contacts dried up and it was getting
chilly (2deg C) sitting with my back on the Trig ( TP5341) I decided on a quick
visit to the WAB net as promised. I knew that many had called me earlier but it
was nice that I was able to give others the Square and Trig as well.
Turbines looming out of the mist...
It was time to leave the
summit with the ghostly mist shrouded Wind Turbines. Not many photographic
opportunities today and despite the conditions it had been an enjoyable
activation which I shall repeat again in the New Year for those valuable Winter
Bonus points :)
Thanks everyone for the contacts, spots and ‘heads up’
73 Allan GW4VPX
My activation set up:- (HF) Yaesu FT817 (5 watts) (4Ah
LiPo), UK-MX 50M linear (for 817) and
12V 9.2 Ah Lithium Ion battery, 3 band
link dipole (60/40/20 (+15m+80m extensions),
(VHF) Yaesu FT270 (5watts)
into a ‘cable tie’ dipole.. Antenna support - 7m Fishing pole.
