Preseli 3
GW/MW-033, GW/MW-011, GW/MW-028
30/04/2016
Now these had been planned about a month ago, not by me
but by Gerald MW0WML. He and Sue had booked in to the Spillman Hotel in
Carmarthen with the view to activating quite a few one pointers which were also
unique summits for Gerald. They called in with us for supper on Friday night
and plans were made for the following day where Val and I would join them for
the Preseli three of Carningli, Foel Cwmcerwyn and Frenni Fawr.
Carningli GW/MW-033
My GPS track
East approach to this one and an agreement that once we
had finished on 2m we would move on to the next summit. Activating these on HF
is possible but the last time I did them with Jack GM4COX we didn’t finish
until late in the evening as spending too much time on the bands upsets your timing
for the other summits. Now Gerald wanted to fit in Brandy Hill on his way back
to Carmarthen so it was ‘hit & run’ tactics today…sorry.
Carningli selfie :)
We never really had time to set up the X5000 vertical as
I found Bill and Debbie on my handheld calling CQ SOTA and were soon in our
logs followed immediately by my friends Don, Roy and Lloyd….Gerald added one more to his log……..thanks everyone

Foel Cwmcerwyn GW/MW-011
My GPS track
It’s nearly 1.9 miles to the summit after a half hour
drive from Carningli. Not many boggy bits today as they have dried out nicely.
It was cold on top even though the sun was peeping in and out of the clouds. As
we arrived at the trig I called Roy in Cardigan once again on my handheld which
started a trickle of chasers and we soon qualified the summit although for me
it was nil activation points as I had activated the summit during winter bonus.
Gerald on his last contact..Geocachers had arrived :)
As we were qualifying the summit on the handheld Gerald was erecting the X5000
vertical and once it was up along came a bonus s2s with our friend Simon on a
snowy Cadair Berwyn. This contact
brought smiles to our faces so thanks Simon. Our XYLs in the mean time had been
Geocaching with another successful outcome on this summit again..2/3 so far.

Frenni Fawr GW/MW-028
My GPS track
A little bit of nostalgia for me on this one as this is
the summit where I first begun my quest for Mountain Goat just over three years
ago. With no reply from Roy on the hh Gerald erected the vertical whilst I sent
a spot to Sotawatch. We soon qualified the summit including a few chats with
the chasers.
Happy activators
As we were coming to the end our XYLs arrived having once again
been Geocaching and with a 100% success rate of finds for the day. This was the
first time that Sue had done any Geocahing so Gerald…there might be trouble
ahead :) . Thanks everybody for the
contacts with some ensuring that they caught us on all three summits.

Foel Cwmcerwyn from Frenni Fawr
Carningli from Frenni Fawr
Now Gerald and Sue had one more summit to activate and
were soon on their way towards Carmarthen whilst we made our way home. When I arrived home the postman had left a
package which contained my Mountain Goat trophy and certificate..nice end to
the day although we all met up later in Carmarthen for a meal at the Tanerdy…a very
pleasant evening…good food and good company..thanks both.
