GW/MW-034 Mynydd Cynros

Valuable s2s points today

GW/MW-034  Mynydd Cynros

25/March/2015

The weather forecast had promised a nice but cold day today so as Barry M0IML/p had called me to say he would be out on G/SE-011 Wilmington Hill for SOTA and a WAB trig I decided to alert for Mynydd Cynros.  The sun was shining on a lovely spring day as I parked opposite the Abbey at Talley and made my way up the zig-zag path towards the summit.
Towards the zig zag path and summit
On the zig-zag path heading towards the summit
From the alerts I knew that Nick ON/G4OOE/p  and Phil ON/G4OBK were out on few summits but that I would probably miss their first activation of the day over in Belgium. I bungeed the pole to a fence post and set about erecting both the 2m dipole and the 60/40/20m linked dipole just next to the trig. It was a surprise that RRT burst into life with an announcement that Nick was calling on 40m and within seconds he was in the log...perfect timing...thanks Nick.

With RRT pinging away I was notified that David G6DTN/p was calling from G/WB-005 Long Mynd-Pole Bank . He was soon in the log followed by Barry and the offer of the frequency once he had finished...thanks.
 GW4VPX/p
Now Barry’s offer came with a ready made pile-up with Mick M0MDA making the log as the first of the regular chasers and within 10 minutes I had finished my first visit to 40m....thanks everyone.

Now I had originally alerted that the first band I would use would be 60m so I duly changed the links and called on 5.398.5. Only one instant response and that was Don G0RQL very happy to have the contact on another band for SOTA, WAB trig and square. Thanks for the chat Don. Whilst talking to Don I noticed flakes of snow and hailstones coming down but thankfully it finished quite quickly.

Now I knew that Rod and Viki were out and about but not due on summit for a while so I took a gamble on calling in on the WAB net first to give them the Trig (TP5012) and the Square SN63.
The trig (TP5012) at Mynydd Cynros
With Geoff G0GWY as net controller I quickly ran down the list ending with a t2t (trig to trig) with Darius M0KCB/p...thanks Darius and all the stations on the net.

It was now time for a coffee and sandwich as there was no imminent SOTA activity on the bands. I also had a play with the various functions on my camera...I’ve done this summit so many times that it’s difficult now to get any variations in the pictures that I take :( My short break was interrupted by Viki MW6BWA/p calling on 2m from GW/MW-009 Beacon Hill. A quick exchange of reports and a QSY on to 70cms and a very happy Viki :)

Viki informed me that Rod MW0JLA/p was all set up on 60m and calling so I went hunting....s2s in the log. The next s2s for Rod was with Jack GM4COX/p on GM/SS-091 Meall Odhar and a message for me to QSY to 5.305.5Mhz. I soon had Jack in the log but under difficult conditions so I could not resist giving him another call later on 40m for a nice QSO and excellent signal reports.....thanks Jack and Rod. Within minutes Nick was calling from his second summit but this time using PA/G4OOE/p so another s2s was in the log followed by a QSY to speak to Mal GW6OVD/A...thanks both.

Now due to the weather conditions over the winter I had neglected 20m so as it was a nice day I ventured on to 20 without being able to spot for some reason on RRT but thanks to those that did spot me on Sotawatch and the DXCC cluster.

The visit to 20m was well worth it as I was called by Herman and Monica on PA/PA-004 Torenberg (Apeldoorn) for an s2s....thank you both.  68 entries in the log today so thanks to all the chasers and activators.

The weather forecast is not too good for the next few days so it will probably be mid-week before I’m out on the hills again....
73 for now.
